Message from the President of Chess Victoria

The first half of the year 2015 was very busy and exciting time for Victorian chess public.


So many wonderful achievements to report.


Congratulations to our new Victorian Champion International Master James Morris who scored 8.5 points from 11 games! This was his second State title.


 Earlier on this year James become the Melbourne Chess Club Champion.



Another International Master, Kanan Izzat, won the Victorian Open Championship, successfully hosted by the MCC.



In 2016 we are looking forward to celebrate 150th birthday of our oldest and biggest club---the Melbourne Chess Club.


Australian Championship 2016 will be organised by MCC at the historical venue of Fitzroy Town Hall.


Traditionally many of our clubs were running their  Championships.


In Box Hill Chess Club, FM Eugene Schon won 2015 Championship along with traditional Autumn Cup.


Young Zachary Loh won Noble Park Chess Club Championship 2015.


Another youngster Kyle Gibson prevailed in the prestigious President Cup event at Croydon Chess Club.


Rapid play  aficionados were  delighted to play in BHCC teams tournament (18! teams participated).


Our country chess enthusiasts presented inaugural Mount Alexander School Chess Challenge, a wonderful new initiative organised by local community and run by volunteers! This fantastic event was staged in historic Castlemaine Gaol!


$20,000 of prize money were distributed amongst the winners and participated schools via the encouragement awards.Every one was a winner!


Chess legend Gary Kasparov was very impressed by this terrific tournament.

In the last few months 3 Victorians have been awarded FIDE titles.


Justin Tan( who based in England at the moment) became International Master.


Sam Chow and Karl Zelesco achieved FIDE Master titles.


Congratulation to all ! We are waiting to see your new successes.


Our next winter months will  be packed with different chess events.


Today many youngsters will participate in the Victorian Junior Championship in different age groups.

Many Victorians have travelled to participate in the Oceania Zonal Championship ( Sydney, July 4-10).


After that another exciting interstate event, this time in Adelaide 


Evelyn Koshnitsky Memorial Chess Festival( July 11-16).


For those who will stay in Victoria, I would highly recommend to participate in the 2015 Croydon Chess Classic (July 11-12).



Chess Victoria is very pleased to support MCC in presenting the Edwins Malitis Memorial Tournaments (starting July 13)


The format of this tournament is new and quite exciting.
