Founded in 1974, Hobsons Bay Chess Club (HBCC) is one of Victoria’s largest and fastest-growing chess clubs, and the largest chess club in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Based in Altona, HBCC provides a welcoming environment for players of all ages and skill levels, from complete beginners through to titled players, state champions, national champions, and international representatives.
HBCC is affiliated with Chess Victoria and the Australian Chess Federation, offering a comprehensive chess pathway through coaching, rated tournaments, social chess, club championships, and representative team events.
The club has developed a strong reputation for junior development and regularly hosts ACF and FIDE-rated events. HBCC is recognised as one of Victoria’s leading tournament organisers and has played a significant role in growing chess participation across Melbourne’s western region and beyond.
Operating from Altona, HBCC is committed to promoting excellence, sportsmanship, community engagement, and lifelong learning through chess. The club welcomes players from all backgrounds and experience levels.
